What age should I tell my kids Santa isn’t real
Lesley Lasker, a parenting specialist explains how to share the truth about Santa with your child without ruining the magic of Christmas with HELLO Magazine.

What Age Should You Tell Your Kids Santa Isn’t Real?
Kids typically start questioning Santa between ages 7–10, though some hold onto the magic longer. You’ll know your child is ready when they ask repeated, curious questions about how Santa really works or mention doubts from friends or siblings.
How to Tell Them
- Start by asking what they already know
- Explain that Santa is a joyful holiday tradition about generosity
- Remind them different families have different beliefs
- Ask them to keep the secret for younger kids
- Reassure them that Christmas fun and gifts will continue
Handling Their Feelings
If they feel sad or disappointed, validate it: it’s normal and okay.
Keeping the Magic Alive
Let older kids help create the magic — hiding gifts, helping with traditions, and surprising younger siblings. It helps them feel proud, involved, and still connected to the holiday spirit.
